1978-1979 Field research in the village of “Aliabad”:
“Dynamics of Sexuality in Iran: A comparison between the older generation and younger generation”
Prof. Mary Elaine Hegland is professor of cultural anthropology at Santa Clara University. From1966 when she went to Iran to teach English in Mahabad as a Peace Corps Volunteer, she has been interested in studying about Iran and has spent perhaps a total of five years in Iran. Mary went to Iran to conduct field research for her Ph.D. dissertation in June 1978 and stayed in “Aliabad,” near Shiraz, until December 1979, resulting in her dissertation, many articles and her book, Days of Revolution: Political Unrest in an Iranian Village. Now Mary has been working about change in practices and meanings of marriage and sexuality in Aliabad. However, in 1978-1979, Mary did not investigate the intimacies of marriage and sexuality, so doesn’t know too much about what sexual practices and meanings in Aliabad were like in 1978-1979. This talk is based on Mary’s paper prepared for the panel “Omissions and Silences in Anthropological Fieldwork: Revisiting Earlier Research” at the anthropology conference.

Session 13: Mazyar Lotfalian, PhD
Worlding with Images: Iranian Visual Culture and the Politics of Identity
In this talk, I argue that, in the context of a new Cold War, an Iranian visual culture has emerged as an important landscape for critical enquiry. To get a sense of the landscape where the Middle Eastern visual material has circulated, consider the following: Roughly around 1991, the post-revolutionary Iranian cinema, through festivals, set the stage for circulation of Iranian visual culture in transnational settings. Roughly around 2001, Middle Eastern painting, installation, performances, and photography began to take the central stage in New York and Los Angeles. Roughly around 2005, Dubai started to become a global market for visual arts in the region. And the stage continues to expand. I frame my argument in the following logic: First, I consider two spaces of production, “meta-political” and “poetic.” Second, I argue that there are changes in curatorial practices in presenting Iranian art in the West. Third, I theorize about the role of technologies as emergent forms that frame aesthetics, such as the case of digital technologies and activism. Fourth, I argue for an anthropological understanding of “auto-ethnography” and “underground” as two important cognitive modes of art-making among Iranian artists. I do so by using examples from visual production in transnational context, that has been ever increasing since 9 11, 2001.
Mazyar Lotfalian is an educator and a researcher who lives and works in San Jose. He focuses his research in Silicon Valley providing consultancy based on anthropological research methods to technological and urban design. He received his BA from UC Berkeley and PhD from Rice University. He has taught at several universities including Yale, Pittsburgh, and Emerson College and worked as Assistant Director of Persian Studies at University of California, Irvine. Much of his effort has focused on advancing multicultural education in California. His new book, in press, is entitled, What People Do with Images: Aesthetics, Politics, and the Production of Iranian Visual Culture in Transnational Circuits.

3) How often your will or trust need to be reviewed and updated to make sure they work and don’t end up a pile of expensive paper in your drawer.
4) What estate planning should cost and who pays the cost of a “too cheap” plan.
5) Importance of naming beneficiaries on retirement accounts.
6) We will go over strategies for claiming Social Security.
